Species & Spawn Information: Apex Predators

September into October is an excellent time to get back onto the lake for fall fishing. Trout spawn in the fall when the water temperatures drop to the species' ideal temperature, approximately 48-57F, with 52F being ideal.  Trout will shallow from deep water and suspend in approx 20' feet of water in anticipation of the temperature hitting just right. The males first begin the work of preparing the spawn bed by chasing out other species to ensure their queens can be safe and comfortable.  The ideal areas are shallow (1-10 feet of water) pebbly to boulder rock beds found around islands, along shorelines or random mid lake reef beds. The females will lay their eggs which the males will then fertilize and then we wait all winter during incubation for the eggs to hatch in early spring!  The spawn process generally happens over a two to three week period so the trout stick around in shallower water for a bit.  Shallow trout are hungry for and angry with anything in their territory and will bite on nearly everything.  We suggest light flutter hooks, casting to shore and dragging across the rock beds at a quick pace to prevent catching rocks.

Lake Trout will spawn later during years with above average temperatures in late summer and early fall.  The longer it takes for the lake to cool in the fall, the later the spawn will occur.  Of course we cannot predict the spawn start/end, which is why we have extended our season into October.
